Milan are planning to add a low-cost reinforcement to their defence in January and are keeping a close eye on Montpellier’s Maxime Esteve.

The Rossoneri signed Marco Pellegrino to shore up their backline in the summer, but he has failed to prove particularly convincing to Stefano Pioli, seeing just 68 minutes of action in their 2-2 draw with Napoli on October 29. He will miss a number of weeks after fracturing his left foot in that match.

Milan’s other backup option Pierre Kalulu has struggled with injuries this term, missing five league games with a muscle injury before suffering a thigh muscle lesion that could require surgery, sidling him for up to four months.

As reported by Tuttosport via TMW, Milan have been keeping an eye on Montpellier’s Esteve as a possible low-cost option to bolster their defence in the January transfer window.

In the summer, the French side wanted around €5-7m for the 22-year-old, but his lack of play time and contract expiring in 2025 would likely force them to lower their demands.

The other defender Milan are following is PAOK teenager Konstantinos Koulierakis. The 17-year-old has already made five caps for the Greece national team and could command a fee of up to €10m.
