Italy are in any case guaranteed a play-off spot, but can qualify automatically for EURO 2024 with four points from the last two matches, or potentially just a win over Ukraine.
The top two teams qualify for EURO 2024, and England have already secured first place on 16 points.
If the worst comes to the worst, Italy will be in the play-offs after winning their Nations League group.
The 3-1 defeat to England, with Ukraine beating Malta by the same result, means the Azzurri drop down to third place in Group C on 10 points.
However, they have a game in hand compared to Ukraine, who are now on 13 points.
Italy can qualify directly for EURO 2024 with a win against North Macedonia (who are already out of the running) on November 17 and a point in the final showdown with Ukraine on November 20.
This is because they beat Ukraine 2-1 at San Siro last month and therefore have a superior head-to-head record.
Due to the war in Ukraine, that game will be played on neutral turf in Leverkusen.
It would also be possible for Italy to draw or even lose against North Macedonia, in which case they would qualify in second place with a victory over Ukraine.
Again, this is due to the head-to-head record, as they would both finish on 13 points.

First Spalletti must leave.
Second give up on qualifying, we don’t need to be make up numbers at the Euros.
Third change Serie A wait afew years and see all the benefits from restricting the number of non Italian’s in each team of Serie A.
right on mancini left because he knew that these players okayevery country has 1 2 goal killers not us too many foreign players coming in not enough italians playing all the time i dont under stand why ballotelli was not called will go to go the playoffs ther are not lousy teams in the playoffs bring conti back
Yes give up, thats mem’s way of life because he never achieved anything of relevence ever
Hungary and Austria are mixed up in the standings table.
Absolutely boulden. I am of a generation where Italy are in these comps as a real favourite. I am struggling with becoming like England and being there to make up the numbers.
There is nothing positive in this team. We made an average England look good whilest confirming to the world that we are in a terrible state.
If You happy with that, then good for you but this is a result of the decline of Serie A and all the foreign players in it.
