Mattia Caldara has undergone an ankle operation and will be sidelined for the remainder of the year, Milan have confirmed.

The 29-year-old Italian centre back returned to the Lombardy capital this summer after the conclusion of his loan spell with Spezia and he was not sent out again, with Stefano Pioli deciding to keep him in the squad.

Caldara was once of the more exciting talents emerging in Serie A in his youth but numerous injuries have derailed his career, especially the Achilles tendon rupture and cruciate ligament rupture suffered in the 2018-19 season.

As announced today, Caldara underwent surgery on his right ankle, completed successfully by doctor Giacomo Zanon. He will be unavailable for at least three months as he works on his recovery.

The 29-year-old was not expected to feature heavily under Pioli this season and will likely leave on a free transfer when his contract expires at the end of the campaign.
