Lazio will face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, but Thomas Lemar is ruled out probably for the rest of the season after suffering a serious Achilles tendon injury.

The attacking winger was a huge €72m signing from AS Monaco in the summer of 2018 and will turn 28 in November.

He was playing in today’s LaLiga encounter with Valencia and stretchered off in agony.

A statement from Atletico Madrid and their medical staff notes the initial diagnosis is of a serious injury to his Achilles tendon.

If confirmed, that would require at least six months out of action, possibly more.

That was the same injury suffered by Leonardo Spinazzola for Italy during the EURO 2020 tournament.

Lazio will take on Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday evening at the Stadio Olimpico.

The group is completed by Celtic and Feyenoord.

Meanwhile, it has not been a good weekend for the Biancocelesti either, who were beaten 3-1 away to Juventus and have now lost three of their opening Serie A games this season.
