Fabio Grosso is set to be appointed as the new coach of Olympique Lyonnais, a return to the club where he had also been a player for two years.

Lyon need a new tactician after a disastrous start to the season, which saw them fire Laurent Blanc with one point from four Ligue 1 games.

Another Italian had been in talks to take the job, but problems arose with Gennaro Gattuso and the club swerved towards Grosso instead.

The 45-year-old has history with Lyon, having represented them as a player from 2007 to 2009, while he also of course converted the winning penalty for Italy in the 2006 World Cup Final against France.

He retired in 2012 and took up coaching a year later at the Juventus youth academy, moving on to Bari, Verona, Brescia, Swiss side FC Sion and most recently Frosinone.

Grosso took Frosinone to promotion by winning the Serie B title, only to then walk away over the summer because he wanted a fresh challenge.
