Milan had the chance to sign Benfica and Argentina star Enzo Fernandez in the summer and they’ll be frustrated with their inaction following his explosive work in Qatar.

The 21-year-old was given the FIFA Young Player Award for his work with Argentina at the World Cup in Qatar, having directly contributed to two goals on the Albiceleste’s path to the final. Fernandez is now one of the hottest prospects in Europe ahead of the January transfer window, giving Benfica the chance to cash in on their young talent.

As highlighted by Gianluca Di Marzio, Milan had the chance to sign Fernandez during the summer transfer window, when intermediaries offered him to various Italian clubs. The Rossoneri’s chief scout Geoffrey Moncada was a huge fan of the 21-year-old but the club decided not to make the move, instead focusing their efforts on Charles De Ketelaere.

Many top clubs around Europe are keen to pick up Fernandez in January and Liverpool have reportedly submitted a lucrative offer for the 21-year-old, something that will disappoint Milan for their inaction in the summer.

  1. Enzo had a great WC and is s good youth but I’m happy with our MID players.

He plays in the same position as Tonali and Isma not CDK. Add Pobega, Adli, Vranckx to the MID cover and I’m still pleased. He would have cost anywhere between 15-20m….saved a bit by going for the U20 Belgium captain instead. Can’t have them all. Now another club has to pay 35m.

    Good luck Enzo….Forza Milan!

  2. Wow…seeing some Enzo transfer news. Benfica apparently has a release clause of 120m euros.

    Well done Rui Costa.

  3. I think he was the alternative to Renato Sanches. We ended up with Vranckx in the end and he doesn’t seem that bad but this guy Enzo was a chance missed for Milan and any other club following him at the time.

  4. Good call Milan Fan…true. Was the alternative to Renato. Similar price bracket.

Renato moving to PSG seemed to work out well for him 🙂
