Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti is too superstitious to talk about winning La Liga and discusses his rapport with his son and assistant Davide: ‘He can become a great coach.’

The Italian tactician will become the first coach to win the league in five different countries if his Real Madrid side beats Espanyol tomorrow. Ancelotti has already won titles in Italy (Milan), France (PSG), England (Chelsea) and Germany (Bayern Munich).

During his pre-match press conference, Ancelotti refused to discuss his feelings but said compared his stars to tennis players.

“They immediately switched the focus to Espanyol after the game against City. Great tennis players don’t waste a match point. Hopefully, we can make it tomorrow,” he said, as quoted by Marca.

“I am very happy, it’s been an easy job because I’ve had the support of the club and the players. I am superstitious, like many Italians, so if you allow me, I prefer to talk once it’s all over,” he said when asked about Madrid winning the title.

“It’s not a revenge for ‘old school coaches’, we must adapt to different times, but I don’t consider myself old. Football is not the same as 20 years ago, rules have changed and one has to keep adapting.”

Ancelotti has been working with his son Davide for many years. The 32-year-old has been his father’s assistant at Napoli, Bayern Munich and Everton. There are also many other Italian members of the team, including Antonio Pintus, who was part of Antonio Conte’s staff at Inter last term.

“Davide has been very helpful. Francesco Mauri works with him and the same goes for Luis and Pintus,” said Ancelotti. “The staff is made of young members and it’s exciting to mix my experience with their enthusiasm.

“Davide is my son and it’s difficult for me to talk about him, but he is a very competent tactician and he can become a coach in the future.”

Ancelotti returned for a second spell in Madrid last summer, signing a three-year deal with the La Liga giants.
