Serie A Highlights: Genoa 1-4 Lazio

The hosts suffered their first defeat under coach Alexander Blessin, leaving them in the drop zone. Leo Ostigard returned from suspension, but Stefano Sturaro, Andrea Cambiaso, Zinho Vanheusden and Nicolò Rovella were still injured. Luis Alberto shook off a knock to start for Lazio, but Luiz Felipe and Stefan Radu weren’t at 100 per cent.

Ciro Immobile drilled just wide, then Francesco Acerbi only grazed his head to a cross from a couple of yards on a corner.

Thomas Strakosha made a sensational save on Ostigard’s header from close range, then parried a sudden Nadiem Amiri snapshot.

Luis Alberto’s ferocious half-volley was straight at Salvatore Sirigu, but Genoa were furious when Acerbi appeared to clip Roberto Piccoli’s heels, but a VAR check did not recommend an on-field review because the initial contact was just outside the box.

While Genoa were still protesting that decision, Lazio took the lead. Adam Marusic cut inside from the left, shrugged off Manolo Portanova and placed a right-foot snooker shot into the far bottom corner.

The visitors doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time when Manuel Lazzari cut inside past Johan Vasquez down the right and laid it off for Immobile to drill into the bottom corner.

It was the first time since Alexander Blessin took over that Genoa had conceded two goals in a single game.

Felipe Anderson was denied a goal when his splendid long-range dipping strike was palmed one-handed out of the top corner by Salvatore Sirigu.

Mattia Zaccagni’s curler flashed inches wide of the far post, then just as Genoa were pushing hard, Lazio added a third.

Luis Alberto’s through ball sent Immobile running, his first attempt hit Sirigu, but he nodded in the rebound for a brace.

Genoa did finally get a goal with a bit of luck, as Amiri squirmed down the right and pulled back from the by-line, it ricocheted off Patric and onto the underside of the crossbar, leaving Strakosha no chance.

Sirigu had to palm away a deflected Immobile shot that was looping over him, but the striker did complete his hat-trick after a Nikola Milenkovic error, as he shrugged off Pablo Galdames and curled in from the tightest of angles.

  1. For how crap he plays for Italy I hope he is never called back again. These calls mean nothing.

  2. oh look …Ciro scores a hattrick in just 2 games after Azzurri Armageddon 2.0.

but for 15+ games for the national team, he cant score to save Italys life.

  3. Immobile what a shame!!! I hope you will never be called again for Italy even tho it’s too late now anyways.
