The Italian media highlighted Mike Maignan’s incredible derby performance against Inter, saying ‘when saves are as good as goals.’

The 26-year-old French shot stopper made four saves in the match and was one of Stefano Pioli’s best performers as the Rossoneri pulled off an important 2-1 comeback win over the Nerazzurri yesterday.

Maignan has made 22 appearances across all competitions so far this season, for a total of 2010 minutes. In that time, he has conceded 24 goals and helped the side keep seven clean sheets. He was brought in to be the long-term replacement for Gianluigi Donnarumma, and so far he has not disappointed.

La Gazzetta dello Sport lauded Maignan, highlighting “when saves are as good as goals” and pointing out that “until Giroud’s one-two, he was by far the best.” Corriere dello Sport also had no doubts about Maignan’s importance, saying that “If Milan win the derby it’s because he keeps them in the running in the most difficult moment.” Tuttosport concluded by suggesting that “Donnarumma is a distant memory” following the match.

Maignan’s ratings in the Italian newspapers:

La Gazzetta dello Sport: 7.5

Corriere della Sera: 7.5

Corriere dello Sport: 7.5

Tuttosport: 8

  1. “until Giroud’s one-two, he was by far the best.”

No. He was the best. It was a stunning performance.

I still find it hard to believe that a lot more clubs didn’t come in for him last summer. It was a terrific piece of business by MIlan. I wonder how much Maignan is worth now?

  2. Well, he’s already won the championship in France with Lille, so he’s quality is not in discussion. Dollarumma is a good GK and won the Europe but that Italy defense probably would’ve won the tournament with another GK anyway. When it comes to club football, he’s behind Mike.

I’m pretty sure we would’ve lost this derby with Dollarumma in goal. He ain’t got nothing over Maignan except younger age.

  3. One of the best in the world right now. His shot stopping and distribution can’t be matched by many others.

  4. @Milan Fan. No doubt Maignan is great and I’m super happy we got him, but I disagree. I mean, I get why you feel the way you do, but let’s keep it real. Donnarumma is better, but Maignan is not far off.

  5. @ Vero Rossonero

I seriously think Maignan is better and less prone to howlers. Look at the goal Dollarumma conceded tonight from Lille lol

  6. @Vero Rossonero Maignan is better in the air, and in the sticks is at least in par with Donnarumma. And with the feet there is no comparison between both, the french is way better. Maybe Dollar is better in penalties but that’s it
