Both Roma representatives and the player's agents, however, insisted the deal was closed and that all the documentation needed was sent to the Lega Calcio in time.
Manchester United have just come out with the official announcement and Smalling is now ready to return to the club where he played on loan during the last season.
“Manchester United have reached an agreement with AS Roma for the transfer of defender Chris Smalling,” the statement reads.
“The centre-back was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson in 2010 from Fulham, and went on to make 323 appearances for the club, scoring 18 goals.”
Shortly after the Red Devils' annoucement, Roma also confirmed that the 30-year-old is going back to the Stadio Olimpico.
According to Sky Sport Smalling will join Roma on a permanent €15m deal. The English centre-back will fly to Rome as early as tomorrow when he will also take his first training session of the season with the Giallorossi.
