Marcello Lippi believes Gennaro Gattuso is ‘becoming a top coach’ and that he has already made Napoli his own team.

Gattuso overcame a tough start to win nine of his 15 games since replacing Carlo Ancelotti in December, and Lippi has high hopes for the Napoli boss.

“Conte’s a top coach, Gattuso’s becoming one,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“He’s growing and he’s shown that at Napoli. He arrived at a difficult time and it almost seemed like the end of an era for the team, between injuries and difficult situations.

“He got them going again them with wisdom, calmness, consistency and even rigidity on their behaviour. We can see now that it’s Gattuso’s team.”

The Partenopei take a 1-0 lead an away goal into the second leg of their Coppa Italia semi-final with Inter

“Rino has the upper hand, 1-0 in the first leg and the return game being at home.

“But every day he’ll be repeating that everything’s still up for grabs. There are no advantages or calculations to be made.

“You have to be aggressive and not make mistakes… And I'm sure Conte’s doing the same.”

Finally, the former Italy CT was asked about his other proteges taking their own steps in management.

“Fabio Cannavaro’s doing very well in China, he’s winning things. He wants to return to Italy at some point: I think he’d like to coach the national team one day.

“Then there are the others, Nesta, Inzaghi, Oddo… there’s many of them. They’ll gain experience and eventually work in Serie A.”
