Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has revealed that “I hate newspapers. Player ratings make me laugh.”

The Pole gave a lengthy interview to his club on Friday, starting off by explaining how became a shot-stopper.

“I did it for my dad [to become a goalkeeper], plus I was always the best amongst my friends. I knew right away that I was better in goal than outfield.

“I believe that you are born to be a goalkeeper because you must be a particular type of person. There is no room for error.

“You must have a great mental strength to be a goalkeeper.”

Szczesny has spent the last three years in Italy but confessed to not liking its newspapers or how they rated player performances.

“I hate newspapers. I changed a lot when I came to Italy because I didn’t know the language and I didn’t know what was being said about me.

“Since then, I’ve kept this thing about not reading them.

“Player ratings make me laugh because the only one who knows how a player performed is the player himself. One newspaper will give [Gonzalo] Higuain a 5.5, the other 7.5.”

Finally, the former Arsenal man was asked about his favourite save.

“My favourite saves are those that are made at the perfect time. Often when people talk about a ‘miracle’ save, it is because you failed in the preparation leading up to it.

“I prefer simple saves because it means I did all the right things.”

The 29-year-old has kept four clean sheets for Juve this season.
