Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini aims to be club captain one day – “it would be an honour”.

The Italian international was born in Rome and came through the club’s youth system, and is seen as a potential heir to the likes of Francesco Totti and Daniele De Rossi.

“I never get tired of saying that, for a Roman lad, playing here gives you a sense of responsibility and pride,” Pellegrini told DAZN.

“When you go onto the pitch it seems like you’re representing your family, who grew up wearing these colours.

“I’d like to be captain of Roma one day, for the sense of belonging I feel with my family.

“It would be an honour to represent Roma and our fans, my friends and the people I love. It would be an added responsibility, and I like to take them on.

“It really would be a beautiful thing.”

Pellegrini was also asked about the best midfielders in the world.

“For vision the best is Daniele [De Rossi], I have to say him or we’ll fall out! Joking aside, he already knows what to do before the ball gets to him.

“As for technique, [Luka] Modric is the best. In winning the ball back it’s [N’Golo] Kante, I remember playing against him in the national team and when he was three metres behind I could feel him coming! He never stops!

“Timing? [Sami] Khedira, he always knows the right time to go.”
