Federico Bernardeschi is keen “not to disappoint” new Italy boss Giampiero Ventura but admits the old guard “are still the best”.

Bernardeschi has been tipped to play a key role in Giampiero Ventura’s Italy team as the Coach is expected to persist with Antonio Conte’s 3-5-2 formation, but the Fiorentina wingback is in no rush to displace his elders.

“Italy? I’m happy to have participated at the European Championship, it was a great experience,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Italy? I’m happy to have participated at the European Championship, it was a great experience,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I said that the Under-21 team would become a reference point in world football but, for now, the old Azzurri group are still the best.

“I hope not to disappoint the expectations of the new Coach Ventura.”
