Napoli are one point off leaders Inter, but Maurizio Sarri insists “it’d be presumptuous to think of the Scudetto.”

The Partenopei have been extraordinary since Sarri replaced Rafa Benitez, winning 17 of their last 20 competitive games.

“I won’t talk about the Scudetto,” insisted the Coach on Mediaset Premium.

“I continue to believe it’s blasphemo to even consider it. Last season let’s not forget Napoli ended up 24 points behind Juventus.

“We certainly cannot expect to bridge such a huge gap in one year. It’d be truly presumptuous.”

Sarri only had his debut Serie A season last term with Empoli, but felt he was destined for Napoli.

“I was born in Naples, as at that time my father worked there, and I thought it was normal to cheer on the team you were born closest to. When we returned to Tuscany, I was the only kid in school who supported Napoli.

“Now I train the team that I supported as a child and that is fantastic, truly such a strong feeling.”

There were doubts over whether Sarri could do the job and Diego Armando Maradona was famously critical after just a couple of early games.

“It was a wonderful gesture of Maradona to apologise for that. He could’ve easily just shrugged it off and forgotten about it, but he wanted to make it public.

“I’ve never met him, so I’d love to do that at the end of the season.”
