Buffon limped off during the game in Split after a nasty cut to the knee, which doctors confirmed required 10 stitches.

Lorenzo De Silvestri suffered a serious knee ligament injury in the same match and will be out for six to eight months.

De Rossi trained with his teammates today at Coverciano despite a right knee problem, but it was decided not to risk him for the friendly against Portugal.

That game will kick off in the Swiss city of Geneva on Tuesday at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).
