Melbourne-based newspaper the Herald Sun confirms that Rudi Garcia’s men will join the English champions and Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid in the International Champions Cup, which is expected to generate over €30m of revenue and be screened worldwide.

The Lupi will open the tournament on July 18 when they face Los Blancos at Melbourne Cricket Ground, before taking on City at the same venue on July 21.

“For seven days in July next year, Melbourne will be the centre of the football world,’’ Victorian Tourism, Major Events and Sports Minister John Eren told the newspaper.

“I am proud that Victoria will be the exclusive host for this exciting tournament, which will deliver strong returns for tourism, major events and sport.

"The ICC is estimated to deliver approximately 50m AUD [€33.5m] in economic impact, and broadcast images of the iconic MCG [Melbourne Cricket Ground] to 150 countries worldwide.’’
