Rudi Garcia has spoken about his decision to substitute Francesco Totti and Ashley Cole at half-time in Roma’s defeat to Bayern Munich.

The Coach withdrew the senior duo with the Giallorossi 5-0 down in a Champions League game that they went on to lose 7-1 on Tuesday.

“When you’re losing like that at half time the Coach has to do something,” Garcia said in his Press conference ahead of the team’s trip to Sampdoria.

“I wanted to give the team an opportunity to save pride. We had the opportunity to make the defeat less significant.

“I made two changes because I couldn’t replace 11 players. I put out the team which was most suitable for the second half.

“There’s also the advantage that Totti and Cole have rested for a half.”

Garcia then looked to draw a line under the Bayern Munich game.

“Not only have we turned the page, it’s a different book. The Champions League is the Champions League.

“We knew we had a difficult group, but at the half-way stage in this group we’re second, which means we haven’t done too badly.

“Serie A has nothing to do with it. We’re second, one point off the top and we continue our journey.”
