Federico Balzaretti is heading towards Roma, but Lazio President Claudio Lotito reveals he was “dragged into” the transfer gossip to force their hand.

The Palermo left-back is on the verge of completing a €4.5m move to Roma after turning down a contract renewal in Sicily and a transfer to Napoli.

However, Lazio President Lotito has revealed a surprising tactic used by Palermo patron Maurizio Zamparini.

“Did we have contact with Palermo about Balzaretti? Well, to be honest it was Zamparini who dragged me into it,” Lotito told Il Messaggero.

“He said: ‘Claudio, I said that you called me so that those who need to step up in this transfer will do so.’

“I was angry!”

Suggesting Lazio were also in the running for Balzaretti seems to have done the trick in forcing Roma’s hand.
