Carlo Pallavicino is one the ‘men in the know' of Italian football and gave some behind the scenes information on Mazzarri's decision to stay at the Stadio San Paolo.

“Yesterday the affair seriously irritated President Aurelio De Laurentiis,” he told Radio Gol.

“The situation had become incandescent. Gian Piero Gasperini's lawyer was already heading to his office in Rome to sign the contract to take over next season.

“Mazzarri had effectively been sacked on Monday and some sources released this information during Juventus-Napoli on Sunday evening.

“The directors, above all Riccardo Bigon, did well to mediate between Mazzarri and De Laurentiis.”

Now Napoli are preparing for the future and a stint in the Champions League, so require reinforcements.

“There is no club in the world with an atmosphere like Naples. I don't know if Riccardo Montolivo could come to Napoli and would prefer not to comment on that right now.

“It's not impossible that Pandev could join the Azzurri, as in the past the club had already shown its interest, but I hope Goran can continue his adventure at Inter.”
