The Viola secured their 1-0 win over Cesena at the Stadio Artemio Franchi thanks to a lone turn in the box from Alberto Gilardino.

“I liked the character of the side,” said Fiorentina boss Mihajlovic. “Cesena are organised, much like Chievo, and I told the lads to have patience and concentration.

“The credit all goes to the players, as it's difficult to break down a team that sits back. Besides, we had to win and are on the right track, as we barely ran any risks.

“This is a crucial victory. We must forget the loss to Roma and begin again from this performance.”

There was bad news for the Tuscans, though, as Mutu limped off during the first half with a suspected groin strain.

“I am not a doctor, but I know it's a muscular problem and we'll have to see what the test results say tomorrow.”

Cesena had beaten Lazio midweek, but returned to disappointment in Florence.

“We were beaten only by a moment of magic from Gilardino,” said Coach Ficcadenti.

“It's a pity, as we had played largely on level terms with Fiorentina, but were not incisive enough in the final third.

“We do play well on our travels, but it's obviously easier at home in front of our crowd. We will get a victory or an important result away from home before the end of the season. Now we must do well in the head-to-heads.”
