Federico Bernardeschi’s early scorcher was beaten away, then Carpi risked an own goal when Zeljko Brkic parried Gagliolo’s attempt to anticipate Nikola Kalinic from point-blank range on a Manuel Pasqual cross.
Matias Vecino’s volley was deflected inches wide of the upright, but Carpi also threatened at the Stadio Artemio Franchi with Di Gaudio and Marco Borriello going close before Gagliolo’s strike thumped the woodwork on 21 minutes.
Kalinic ran on to a Bernardeschi through ball only to drill across the face of goal and Cristian Zaccardo needed a goal-line clearance to stop Ante Rebic converting a Khouma Babacar assist.
On the stroke of half-time, Fiorentina rattled the woodwork too, as Milan Badelj’s volley from a poorly-cleared corner smacked against the crossbar.
Brkic palmed a Bernardeschi free kick out of the top corner
Di Gaudio scored a fine individual goal, cutting in from the left to curl a right-foot finish into the far bottom corner from 12 yards.
An Ilicic free kick was deflected just wide, then late on Luca Marrone and Marcos Alonso had shots parried. Davide Astori fired off target when clear on goal in stoppages.
To make matters worse, Gonzalo Rodriguez and Jerry Mbakogu were sent off for an off the ball scuffle.
