Paolo Maldini claims Italy’s failure to qualify for the World Cup stemmed from the FIGC “not caring about football.”
Italy are in a process of transition, with Giampiero Ventura sacked after their playoff defeat to Sweden and Carlo Tavecchio pressured into resigning as President of the FIGC.
“Italy’s failure to qualify for the World Cup was unexpected, but it was also the culmination of a four-year period, during which the federation didn’t care about football,” the ex-Milan defender, who played 126 times for the Azzurri, told RMC Sport.
Alessandro Costacurta has since been tasked with cleaning up the Italian federation as Vice-Commissioner, and Maldini was asked about his former teammate for club and country.
“Costacurta? There’s not only the choice of the next CT, but there’s also reform of the Leagues, youth sector, B teams and women’s football,” noted the 49-year-old.
“He has a delicate job on his hands and one that must be solved in a short time. It won’t be easy.”
