Former Napoli Coach Maurizio Sarri will be cheering on his former side to win the Scudetto this season – “for the city and for the fans”.

The Chelsea boss took the Partenopei to 91 points last season, but it still wasn’t enough to overhaul Juventus.

Now Carlo Ancelotti is looking to bring the title to Naples for the first time since 1990.

“I hope he can do it, for the city and for the fans,” Sarri told Il Mattino.

“Naples is an extraordinary city, one which deserves to win the league. As a Napoli fan I’m happy that Carlo is the Coach now, because not only has he won everywhere he’s been, he’s brought out the best in people.”

Napoli came so close last season, but Sarri admitted that watching on television as Juve got a last-gasp winner away at Inter broke his side’s spirit.

“I often think back to that Fiorentina-Napoli game. It would have been the crowning of an extraordinary story; of a dream of mine, of the team and of the whole city.

“Some people have made fun of my words, but anyone who has played sport knows we lost the Scudetto in that hotel room.

“The best moment? Nothing was more beautiful than winning at Juventus Stadium.

“It was a unique night, and on a human level the Neapolitans showed so much love for me every day.

“The worst? What [President Aurelio] De Laurentiis said at the Bernabeu right after the defeat to Real Madrid.”

The Coach was asked if he’d ever return to Napoli.

“It could be a goal of mine to finish my career at Napoli,” Sarri admitted.

“First though I want to stay at Chelsea, this wonderful club, for a long time. Here everything is stupendous, there’s nothing that doesn’t work well.

“It’s a dream to coach this club.”
