Chris Smalling admits this has been one of the toughest seasons of his career but is delighted by Roma‘s attitude against Milan and Daniele De Rossi’s impact at the club.

Smalling started his first Europa League game this season last night, contributing to Roma’s 1-0 win over Milan in the quarter-finals first leg.

The ex-Manchester United defender had only made seven Serie A appearances prior to Thursday’s meeting at San Siro.

“It was a special night,” he told Sky Sport after the final whistle, as quoted by Milannews.

“It’s been one of the most difficult games in my career, also mentally. I had great feelings tonight and I am happy to have contributed.”

What made the difference for Roma?

“Our belief. We occupied all spaces with great confidence and we deserved to win,” the Englishman replied.

How about Daniele De Rossi?

“He has given a big twist to the whole club. Everyone fights and wants to play,” concluded the English defender.

Roma’s next game is against Udinese at the Bluenergy Stadium on Sunday at 17:00 UK time (GMT+1). The return leg against Milan will be played at the Stadio Olimpico next week, on Thursday, April 18.

Roma currently sit 5th in the Serie A table with 55 points in 31 matches and have been unbeaten since February 10 in league matches.
