Inter President Erick Thohir has stressed the need for his side to be able to deploy more than one formation.

The Indonesian placed particular emphasis on the ability of the Nerazzurri to play with both a three and four man defence, adding that recent signing Dodo was brought in to allow the squad to do this.

“The make-up of the squad must be balanced, in order to be able to play with three or four defenders,” Thohir said to Bolanews.

“We have Yuto Nagatomo and Jonathan to play on the flanks in a 3-5-2, but when we move to a four we need a new solution.

“We need to remember that we are not just dealing with Serie A, Nagatomo and Jonathan cannot play 50 matches.

“For this reason the team needed additions like D’Ambrosio and Dodo.”

Thohir also discussed the club’s forward line and hinted that the San Siro giants are still open to bringing in new faces to strengthen the squad.

“Attack is a crucial department, a lot will depend on the tactical aspect. If we play with just one forward, Icardi and Palacio are enough, but they are not enough if we want to play with three up front.

“Ricky Alvarez could also move forward so he would add to Palacio and Icardi, with only Ruben Botta in reserve.

“We will see and we will assess the situation as well as we can. The summer is still long, so there are a lot of possibilities.”

Finally, the businessman stated that while he would be delighted if it occurred, he does not necessarily expect the Nerazzurri to qualify for the Champions League this season.

“What we have promised to the fans was to take Inter into Europe again. We want to do the best we can.

“Champions League? If it happens it’s welcome, I would be very happy. Let’s not forget that my first full season at the head of the club will be 2014/15.”
