It has been confirmed that Roma defender Leandro Castan has signed a new contract with the club.

The 27-year-old made 36 Serie A starts for the Giallorossi this season as Rudi Garcia’s side finished second in Italy’s top flight.

Now, it has been announced that his consistency has been rewarded by the agreement of a new four-year deal for the Brazilian.

The player’s old contract had been set to expire in 2016, with the extension meaning he will now be tied to Stadio Olimpico until 2018.

“We are extremely happy and honoured to have extended Castan’s contract by two years,” Roma President James Pallotta commented.

“He is one of the main reasons why our defence was so strong last season. We want him to be here wearing the Roma shirt for many more years.”

While Castan’s future has now been secured, recent reports suggest his central defensive partner Mehdi Benatia could soon be on his way out of the club.
