Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri believes the Rossoneri have one of the most competitive centre-back pairings in Serie A.

Cristian Zapata and Philippe Mexes have taken some time to become the first choice combination at San Siro, but Allegri has hailed the international duo.

“I think that Zapata-Mexes is one of the best defensive pairings in Italy,” the former Cagliari boss commented.

“I am very happy with their progress as I am happy with all my defenders even if they have been criticised.”

Zapata is on a loan deal from Villarreal, but reports this week suggested that the Diavolo were looking to sign him outright.

Mexes has played in 24 League games this term, while the Colombian has been fielded in 26 top-flight matches.

Milan, statistically, have the third best defence in the land behind Juventus and Napoli. They’ve conceded 38 goals in 37 games.
