Reports in Italy are suggesting that Zenit St Petersburg were the side who offered Napoli over €50m for Edinson Cavani in the summer.
Napoli chief Aurelio De Laurentiis revealed last month that he rejected a €55m bid for the player at the start of this season, but didn’t state from whom.
Now Sport Mediaset are suggesting that the money was tabled by Russian giants Zenit, a side bossed by Italian tactician Luciano Spalletti.
Cavani subsequently signed a new contract with the Azzurri in a deal which now includes a €63m rescission clause.
Zenit did go on to spend heavily in the summer by purchasing striker Hulk from Porto for around a reported €40m.
