Why Milan kept a low profile in the January transfer window

Contrary to Juventus and Inter, Milan have kept a low profile during the January transfer window and the reasons for their choice have been explained.

The Rossoneri have not completed any major signing in the winter transfer window despite injuries to their starting centre-backs Simon Kjaer and Fikayo Tomori.

The former Chelsea defender will remain out of action for a month, but Kjaer will only return in 2022-23 after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament injury in December.

Milan’s main transfer target was – and still is – Lille’s Sven Botman, but the Ligue 1 champions didn’t want to sell the Dutchman in January.

The Rossoneri will make a new attempt in the summer, but they must end the current campaign with Tomori, Alessio Romagnoli, Pierre Kalulu and Matteo Gabbia.

As explained by Milannews.it, the Diavoli did not want to sign a player they didn’t believe in. They were open to making a big-money offer for one of their top targets, such as Botman or Torino‘s Gleison Bremer but had to deal with their clubs’ reluctance to sell.

Milan preparing for summer investment in a top striker

They had set their sights on Manchester United’s Eric Bailly and Tottenham’s Japhet Tanganga but dropped them after the signing of 18-year-old Marko Lazetic, who filled their last spot for non-EU players.

Lazovic replaced Pietro Pellegri, who joined Torino on loan via Monaco.

Milan coach Stefano Pioli and club directors believe the current team is already competitive to get to the end of the season.

The Rossoneri were eliminated from Europe, so they are only involved in Serie A and Coppa Italia.

Milan are already preparing for the summer when they will need to buy a centre-back, a centre midfielder and a new striker.
