English referee Michael Oliver is officiating the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final between Inter and Benfica, most famous for Gigi Buffon saying he had ‘a dustbin for a heart’ when giving a penalty against Juventus.
Tonight’s game kicks off at 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT) at the Estadio da Luz.

Oliver wields the whistle and just turned 38 in February and has been entrusted with numerous big games, including the FA Cup Final in 2017-18 and 2020-21, plus the UEFA Super Cup earlier this season when Real Madrid beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0.
His record with Italian clubs is mixed, with six wins, four draws and three defeats.
The most famous match was the Champions League quarter-final between Real Madrid and Juventus at the Bernabeu in April 2018.
As Real Madrid had won the first leg 3-0, Juve needed to get an identical result in Spain to force extra time and they were on the verge of achieving that when Oliver awarded a penalty for a contentious handling offence.
This infuriated Juventus captain Buffon, who was promptly sent off for dissent and continued to rage at Oliver in several post-match interviews.
The goalkeeper accused Oliver of being too “inexperienced and young” for the task, insisting the referee had “a dustbin for a heart” in giving such an unclear penalty in the most high-pressure of circumstances.
“Unfortunately, this young man found himself in a situation that was too complex, too garbled and too big for him to deal with. I’m not even angry with him, but in the heat of the moment I felt defrauded. Not defrauded of the result, but of the night, that can never be repeated.”
