Mauro Icardi’s wife and agent says “there are top clubs who have been following him” but “he’s thinking of Inter and is happy to be here”.

The striker has been linked with Real Madrid, and his record of 15 goals in 14 Serie A games has raised concern that the €110m release clause in his contract is too low.

“Mauro is an important player, and there are top clubs who have been following him for some time,” Wanda Icardi told Corriere dello Sport.

“It’s right that a striker like that, one of the best number 9s in the world, has big clubs who are interested in him and are considering what he’s worth. But they have to please him and Inter.

“I’d prefer not to tell you who is calling me, I talk about these things while Mauro is thinking of Inter and is happy to be here.

“The directors know he has rejected clubs that other players wouldn’t reject, because he has the Nerazzurri colours in his heart.

“I won’t deny though that a lot of teams are interested in him, many more than you hear around the place…

“Will he move elsewhere in future? It’s difficult to say, because in football you never know what will happen.

“He has a contract, he’s thinking of winning with Inter, he’s happy with what he’s doing and he’s aiming for the maximum.

“No-one knows the future though, the last word is the club’s and there are offers which cannot be refused.

“How much is he worth? At least €200m.”

It has been suggested that the Beneamata will offer a new contract, raising Icardi’s release clause or perhaps removing it altogether.

“It’s a discussion we have to have with the club. It’s up to the directors to say if the current contract is suitable and what they want to do.

“He’s an Inter player, the captain, and he’s always shown that he’s tied to this team. We’re not asking for anything, if the club wants to change something in his contract it’s up to them.

“I asked for the release clause because I thought it was right to give a player of his quality and his level the release clause of a top player.

“I don’t know if the club will want to adjust the clause and, consequently, his contract.

“The clause shouldn’t scare anyone though, even if a club meets the release clause the decision is always up to the player.”

Wanda was also asked about the Inter captain’s start to the season, and she insisted that she isn’t surprised.

“I believe in him and I know what he can do. With this group and this Coach [Luciano Spalletti] it’s going well. Under those conditions he always surprises and gives you even more than usual.

“I like being his agent, because everything stays at home. Mauro makes it easy for me, sometimes when we talk about a renewal he’ll score four or five goals in two games and negotiations get much easier.”
