Gonzalo Villar insists he doesn’t feel the “pressure” of making the step from Elche to Roma, but did lose 2kg through the stress of transfer talks.
The midfielder turns 22 next month and arrived from Elche in a deal worth €4m plus up to €1m in bonuses, making his debut as a substitute in the 4-2 defeat to Sassuolo on February 1.
“I want to thank everyone for the welcome I received and all the help I am getting to settle in,” said Villar in his press conference.

“I think my best position is the Number 8, with a more defensive midfielder by my side, but I have taken on numerous different roles in the middle of the park.
“There is pressure at all big clubs and anyone who can’t handle that should probably dedicate themselves to a different profession, as coach Paulo Fonseca said.”
However, the tension of getting the transfer done in time for the January deadline did cause Villar to lose 2kg in the week before completing the move.
“It’s true, they were frenetic days, it was all a bit strange. We couldn’t conclude the deal for various reasons, but fortunately it was all resolved in the end.
“I come from a second division club in Spain, so the step up to Roma is a very big one, but I do feel ready to face it. I have faith. It’s up to me now to prove I am a scrupulous player who will live football 24 hours a day.”
