Cagliari fans were at the airport to greet new signing Jakub Jankto. ‘I am very happy to be here, I already worked with Claudio Ranieri for two years.’

The midfielder touched down in Sardinia this evening and will undergo a medical tomorrow to complete the transfer from Getafe for circa €1m.

He had spent last season on loan at Sparta Prague and in February made history as the first active international player in European football to come out as gay.

Jankto was given a warm welcome by supporters and media at the airport.

“I am very happy to be here, thank you so much for this. We will do everything we can to make the people of Sardinia happy,” he told reporters.

It was Ranieri who was behind the transfer, having used Jankto in his midfield at Sampdoria for two seasons.

“I already worked with Ranieri for two years.”
