Athletic Bilbao manager Ernesto Valverde admits he had “hoped for something more” than a 1-1 draw at Napoli.

The first leg of the Champions League play-off ended all-square at the Stadio San Paolo with Gonzalo Higuain wiping out an Iker Muniain opener.

“We had hoped for something more, as we played the first 70 minutes very well. We conceded that Higuain goal and Napoli created more chances after that,” Valverde told Sky Sport Italia.

“I think it is probably the right result and we’ll see what happens in the second leg. We don’t know if Muniain’s goal will make the difference, but clearly Napoli have to score in Bilbao.

“We played a very intense game tonight and it will all go down to the second leg.”

Napoli have to either win in Bilbao or draw at 2-2 or more. A 1-1 result will lead to extra time.
