Milan are not expected to sign a new centre-back on the transfer deadline day as the Rossoneri had targeted ‘high profile’ defenders to raise the quality of Stefano Pioli’s team.
Matteo Gabbia’s return from his loan spell at Villarreal will likely be Milan’s only addition in defence in the winter transfer window.
As transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio explained on Sky Sport Italia, the Rossoneri will likely end the January window without a second centre-back.
“They are still looking for a centre-back, but they can’t find one with a high profile, so if they have to sign whatever defender, they could just remain as they are,” said Di Marzio, as quoted by Milannews.
Milan had been linked with several players in January, from Arsenal’s Jakub Kiwior to Brest’s Lilian Brassier and Barcelona’s Clement Lenglet, currently on loan at Aston Villa.
Pioli said at a press conference in January that the Rossoneri would work to sign a new centre-back after Gabbia’s return from Villarreal given that it is still unclear when Fikayo Tomori, Malick Thiaw and Pierre Kalulu will return to action.
