Milan forward Fernando Torres says that he still wants to be involved with Vicente del Bosque’s Spain in the near future.
The on-loan striker netted the winner in the Euro 2008 Final against Germany in Vienna and then was in the squad that went on to conquer the World in 2010 in South Africa and the European Championships again two years later.
After the World Cup flop in Brazil, though some key members of the old guard have moved out, but Torres remains buoyant about his chances to re-join Spain before Euro 2016.
“I don’t think that my cycle with Spain is over. I’ve got enough confidence in myself,” Torres told Cuatro recently, in quotes picked up today by Italian media.
“I don’t think a generational shift is needed. The change has already happened. You cannot replace one player with another one with the same qualities.
“There’s no two identical players, but there are players that deserve explanations.
“The World Cup has been a disappointment – we all knew that it was our last time playing together.
“It was difficult to face Chile, as we weren’t really prepared mentally. We knew what could happen next.
“Maybe we haven’t been honest with ourselves, a thing we had always done in the past.”
Torres also gave his viewpoint about Iker Casillas who has been heavily criticised for a couple of blunders in one of Spain’s most recent qualifiers against Slovakia.
“If you tell me about Iker, the first thing that comes up to my mind is when he made that save on Arjen Robben during the World Cup Final.
“And nobody can erase this. We were all there and nobody can erase what Iker has been for Real Madrid and Spain.”
