Fiorentina and Serbia defender Nenad Tomovic said what happened against Albania “was absolutely deplorable.”

He was on the bench when the Euro 2016 qualifier was abandoned in Belgrade, as riots were sparked by a drone flying a politically-charged flag over the stadium.

The scuffles started on and off the pitch when the Serbian players snatched the flag down.

“What happened yesterday was absolutely deplorable,” wrote Tomovic on the official Fiorentina website.

“We players on the bench realised straight away that, if the flag was not taken away quickly, it was very probable our fans would try to run on to the pitch to make it disappear.

“That is why we sprinted on to the field. In any case, my only intent was to restore calm and, along with some of my teammates, we helped the Albanian players to get back into the locker room.”
