Milan director Paolo Maldini confirmed last night that he had already tried to sign Tomori over the summer.

The England international turned 23 last month and is a product of the Chelsea youth academy, although he already had loan spells with Brighton, Hull City and Derby County.

Tomori struggled for playing time at Stamford Bridge this season, with just four appearances in all competition for a total 234 minutes of football.

Milan are very active on the transfer market in January, having already snapped up Soualiho Meite on loan with option to buy from Torino ad striker Mario Mandzukic as a free agent.
