New Inter President Erick Thohir claims Coach Walter Mazzarri “is similar to Jose Mourinho.”
The Indonesian investor took over from Massimo Moratti this week and visited the Gazzetta dello Sport offices.
“It’s all very exciting, because I’ve been an Inter fan for a long time. For now the most important thing as President is to work hard and concentrate on everyone moving in the same direction.
“As for the sporting aspect, I think we’ve got all the fundamentals in place and talented young players who we hope to bring from the Primavera side into the senior team.”
Papers have repeatedly suggested Thohir will fire the staff in charge of transfers, namely Marco Branca and Piero Ausilio, but he met with them yesterday.
“I got to know them better, to understand their strategies and their vision. Naturally there is a strategy we also have to discuss with Mazzarri on who is worth signing and who isn’t. We’ll evaluate how to move on the market.
“I think Mourinho is one of the best Coaches who has been at Inter, though naturally results are down to a combination of work between the Coach, management and players.
“Mourinho won the Treble in 2010. He’s one of the best, but I see Mazzarri has a similar personality. I hope he can start laying the foundations to build a strong side over the next two to three years.”
Thohir was also asked whether he would combine his love for basketball with football at Inter.
“It’s too early to talk about that. Of course, seeing as I have interests in the United States and the MLS, there could be synergy in future with DC United, but the important thing now is to focus on the football at Inter.”
