“We want to focus, prepare and win this game, because it would mean a step towards our objective and beating a direct rival for position,” the director told Sky Sport Italia.

“Our defence is the second best in Serie A, I believe, and the goalkeeper is having an extraordinary season.

“We mustn’t get over the top with everything that is around us, because these results are the consequence of a very long process, step by step, with hard work and planning. We have to keep that humility and continue to build.”

If Lazio win today, they will leapfrog Inter to go into second place and still have a game in hand.

“We have said from the start that our objective is to qualify for the Champions League. If we find ourselves within reach of the top with six or seven games to go, then we can think about trying to target the Scudetto, but not before then.”

Lazio have been practically static during the January transfer window.

“Balance is fundamental for a team that has played together for a long time and plays by heart. We do not see anything right now that can help truly improve this side.

“There could be options for depth players, alternatives to the first choices, but considering we went out of the Coppa Italia last week and are no longer in Europe, this squad is more than competitive.”
