“We need to improve in terms of consistency. We know the tournament well by now, it’s important to start on the right foot with a victory,” the director of sport told Sky Sport Italia.
“We must try to get the qualification locked down as quickly as possible so that we can turn our focus towards Serie A.”
Jony Rodriguez and Denis Vavro get their first starts, while Valon Berisha has finally put injury problems behind him.
“I am a very patient person. I know tonight’s performance will not decide how I evaluate players. It’ll be important to give them confidence and help them settle into the squad.
“I’m pleased that Berisha has returned to being the player we saw two years ago and not last season, so he fully deserves this opportunity.”
Lazio had been leading away to SPAL on Sunday afternoon, but ended up losing 2-1 at the Stadio Paolo Mazza.
“We talked for a long time and analysed the SPAL defeat carefully. There has been a great deal of enthusiasm over the last two months, but the final 20 minutes against SPAL were unacceptable and the anger of the fans entirely understandable.
“We must work day by day to ensure these blackouts don’t happen, because the moment you take your foot off the gas, anything can happen.
“That is a defect we’ve had for a while and we’ve got it into our heads this season to sort it out.”
