Switzerland coach Murat Yakin reflected on Yann Sommer’s struggles at Bayern Munich and why Inter is ‘the right club’ for the goalkeeper.

The 34-year-old Swiss shot stopper joined the Bundesliga giants in the January transfer window for around €9m, tasked with covering the injured Manuel Neuer, but he struggled to show his best during his six-months in Bavaria.

Inter identified Sommer as their primary option to replace Andre Onana this summer and worked hard to finalise a deal with Bayern, agreeing to pay around €6m, handing the goalkeeper a two-year contract with an option for a third worth €2.5m net per season.

Speaking to Sport1 via Calciomercato.com, Yakin first touched on Sommer’s difficult six-month spell with Bayern.

“I know Yann very well, I coached him at Basel. He is a player who needs confidence to be able to give 100%, he did not deserve such treatment. He became a victim of a certain mechanism that only occurs at Bayern.

“When he came to the national team, of course I spoke to him. It wasn’t Yann I knew. At Bayern he was under extreme pressure, and that’s where he showed that he is a strong goalkeeper. We worked it out with our goalkeeper coach.”

He tried to explain what was wrong with the 34-year-old.

“He felt support from a sporting point of view, but then something was missing, which didn’t go away. All the criticism hurt him, but he never complained. The Bayern period was not easy for Yann, and he struggled.”

Finally, Yakin discussed Sommer’s move to Inter this summer.

“As long as he has the opportunity to play abroad, he will have to do so. He’s not even thinking about quitting. Yann still has a lot to give, Inter are the right club for that.”

Sommer has already made three appearances for Inter this season, keeping three consecutive clean sheets in wins over Monza, Cagliari and Fiorentina.
