Inter’s Dejan Stankovic has admitted that he did consider quitting the game given his fight against injury.

The midfielder returned to action last night in the win over Chievo – his first appearance since a match against Parma on May 2, 2012.

“Nine months is a long time,” the former Lazio player noted. “It was hard to stay out for so long, after two operations and at my age…

“I thought about giving up on three or four occasions, but I didn’t thanks to the help of my family and the medical staff.”

Stankovic, now 34, has been battling to get back into action after a problematic Achilles tendon injury halted his career.

“The nightmare is over, now I hope to get back to full fitness and help my team out,” he added. “I'd like to thank the fans for the amazing reception they gave me – it was like a second debut.”

Stankovic is now part of a different squad to the one he left following some high profile departures in the summer and last month.

“What type of squad am I back among? A great one, a bit tired every now and then because we have so many games, but I've never seen them get down,” he continued.

“We have targets and we mustn't stop trying. As the Coach said, we're not dead and buried. And we've added quality with the new signings.”

Stankovic has been at Inter since his 2004 move from Lazio.
