Dick Advocaat quit as Serbia Coach and one of the contenders to take over is Udinese assistant manager Dejan Stankovic.
The Dutch tactician announced the news following last night’s surprise 3-1 home defeat to Denmark.
“The FSS wishes to thank Advocaat as he has shown utmost professionalism and we are disappointed that our cooperation with him ended so abruptly,” read a statement from the Serbian Federation.
“We wish him all the best in his future endeavours.”
Advocaat explained his decision, claiming “the pressure, which was everywhere to be seen, was too much to bear by this team and I had never faced such a difficult situation in my entire career.
“Serbia have to move on immediately and find a better way and I thank the FSS for their support throughout.”
The bench has temporarily been handed to current Serbia Under-21 Coach Radovan Curcic.
According to Sky Sport Italia, one of the hottest names in the running is Stankovic, a former star of the Serbia squad.
He has never actually worked as a Coach, but is currently assistant manager to Andrea Stramaccioni at Serie A club Udinese.
