Sassuolo President Giorgio Squinzi admits he was “surprised” Domenico Berardi opted not to join Juventus.

The forward was co-owned by the two clubs until the summer of 2015, when the Neroverdi took his registration outright.

Inserted into the deal was an agreement that Berardi could move to Turin for a pre-agreed price a year later, but the Italian Under-21 international decided to stay at Mapei Stadium.

“The lad himself decided to stay at Sassuolo,” Squinzi confirmed in an interview with Il Resto del Carlino.

“To tell the truth, I was convinced he’d go to the biggest Italian club [Juventus], it seemed like it was all done. Then he decided to stay with us, even giving up some money.

“I was surprised, now we have to turn him into symbol of Sassuolo.”

Sassuolo have taken nine points from their opening seven games, but the patron believes they should have more, not least due to a win over Pescara being overturned.

“We’re missing six points, three got lost by certified mail, and three because of very questionable refereeing at Milan.”
