Sassuolo patron Giorgio Squinzi confirms he is “ambitious” and considers the club a “model” for Italian business in sport.

The Neroverdi take on Juventus this evening in their third consecutive Serie A season.

“Sassuolo started out as a sponsorship opportunity and I got the club when it was a tiny side relegated into the Promozione amateur league,” Squinzi told TV2000.

“I fixed it up and we immediately went into Serie C2, from there the climb to Serie A.

“I don’t buy into the De Coubertin theory of sport being all about the taking part. I want to win!

“This club represents a model of Italian business in sport that works, as it’s tied to the territory and includes many Italians.

“Out of 26 players we have under contract, 23 are Italian and only three foreign. In Serie A we’ve had to play sometimes against an opposition XI made up entirely of foreign players.

“I don’t have a problem with foreign players, but it’s an advantage to have a homogenous group without language barriers who all understand precisely what the Coach is telling them. The results have proved us right too.”

Sassuolo are also one of only three clubs in Italy who own their stadium, along with Juventus and Udinese.
