A Sporting CP presidential candidate claims Claudio Marchisio ‘would already be at the club’ if he was elected sooner, while Claudio Ranieri ‘promised the title’.
Pedro Madeira Rodrigues will be among those running in Saturday’s election, and the candidate also revealed former Chelsea defender John Terry was ‘very close’ to joining the Portuguese side.
“If I wanted to, I could already announce three players today but I won’t because you can’t go beyond certain limits,” he told Sporting TV.

“Unfortunately we lost Marchisio, who’d already be at Sporting if I’d been elected last week, while on Monday we lost another champion who signed for Olympiacos [Yaya Toure].
“Terry? He’s great champion, who even wants to win even training matches. I can’t guarantee him a salary that he’s used to, but I think he’s very close to becoming a Sporting player.
“Ranieri? We took a step back with him. The other candidates and I believe the current Coach Peseiro can represent the right solution for now.
“However, I’ll continue to defend a profile like that of Ranieri in the medium to long term: he’s won trophies at all the clubs he’s been at, including a [Premier League] title against all the odds, and was named the best Coach in the world.
“He promised me that he’d become a champion with Sporting. He’s the right person.”
