Luciano Spalletti admits Inter “should’ve done better and allow tension to strangle us” in the victory over SPAL. “You have to prove with performances every time you deserve to be at Inter.”

The Nerazzurri took some time to break SPAL down amid an injury crisis, but finally won 2-0 with Matteo Politano and Roberto Gagliardini goals.

“There were still 11 Inter players and we should’ve done better. We allowed the tension to strangle us, as it sometimes does, and we lose sight of our qualities, become too timid and insecure,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“We have to use our brains and realise San Siro is an intimidating atmosphere, but we are Inter and we have to win this game. It all becomes simpler than you imagine it would be if you look at it that way. It’s not fear, it’s timidity.

“We have this fire within us, but every now and then turn it down to a tiny flicker. Once the goal went in, everyone seemed like a different player, totally transformed and brimming with confidence.

“Every now and then we get dragged into the analysis that surrounds us and the players struggle to prove themselves. I tell you in training that Dalbert is going to be an extraordinary player, but in the first half today he fell over twice and didn’t make a single decision. After the break, he did much better and smashed SPAL down that left flank.”

Spalletti was asked whether Icardi will return from his ‘injury’ in time for Thursday’s Europa League clash with Eintracht Frankfurt – where Lautaro Martinez is suspended – or even next week’s Derby della Madonnina.

“I won’t talk about Icardi, because whatever I say gets translated into something else. We have a common objective, which is victory.

“We don’t have to be hand-in-hand, but we need to maintain our contract with Inter. It’s not that you sign a five-year contract and that’s it, you stay for five years. You have to prove with the performances every time that you deserve to be at Inter.”

Spalletti also clarified the moment that occurred before kick-off, when he was spotted telling a fan in the crowd: ‘Forza Inter. You have to say Forza Inter.’

“It was absolutely not a row with anyone. If you watch at the very start, I said: ‘Bravo, Forza Inter. You have to say Forza Inter.’ Because cheering on the club and the team is what it’s all about.”
