Real Betis were among the other clubs interested, but a return to Sampdoria proved too intriguing a draw to tun down.

The 27-year-old Italy international already played at Samp from the summer of 2013 to January 2015, when moving on to Napoli.

He has been at Southampton since January 2017 in a move worth €17m, but struggled for playing time recently.
